Feasts of the Senses / Kars and His Time
Here is the English translation of the text:
Georges Kars, also known as Jiří Karpeles, found himself in the right place at the right time.
A boy from Kralupy nad Vltavou, born to a Jewish miller, he showed artistic talent from an early age, which he first developed during his studies in Munich. Then came a fateful change of scenery – Paris, the 1920s. The exuberant interwar period, though no one called it that at the time, marked an extraordinary cultural blossoming for Paris. Not only in Gertrude Stein’s apartment, but throughout the city, a remarkable number of talents gathered – from Picasso to “our” Kars.
Although this exhibition is mainly about him, you will certainly notice that it is complemented by works from other artists.
These are all people Kars may – or may not – have met. All those who might have been sitting two tables away from him in a brasserie. All those who might have passed him on a Paris street with a canvas in hand. All those who, like him, sat in the garden of Suzanne Valadon’s studio in Montmartre. All those who believed they were destined to make something of themselves.
This exhibition is dedicated to all the dreamers.
