František Kupka - Little known and unknown

9. 6. 2024 - 7. 7. 2024
On the occasion of the bicentenary of the birth of Bedřich Smetana, the Zdeněk Sklenář Gallery in Litomyšl will present another world-renowned Czech artist. He is the painter František Kupka (1871–1957). Unlike Bedřich Smetana, František Kupka lived most of his life in France, which is why he fell almost into oblivion for many years in his homeland. His impressive work remains with us surrounded by unanswered questions, mainly related to the period of his creative rise. Originally a brilliant realist, he was able to transform into a pioneer of abstraction and mentally compete with Piet Mondrian or Wassily Kandinsky. After the inaugural exhibitions of Kupka's work in China, Mongolia, Cambodia and Thailand, the Zdeněk Sklenář Gallery continues to periodically present the painter's work, which systematically collects and reminds domestic and foreign audiences of its importance.
The Zdeněk Sklenář Gallery's long-term interest in the hitherto neglected works of our greats also led to the realization of this exhibition.
