The Goose in Kampa

15. 6. 2024 - 15. 9. 2024
The collection of Galerie Zlatá husa, founded by former TV Nova director Vladimír Železný, is one of the most important private art collections in the Czech Republic. Its core focus lies in works of classical modernism and 1960s art. The exhibition "Husa na Kampě" presents Železný’s personal selection of seventy works that illustrate the radical transformation of Czech art from the beginning of the 20th century to the 1960s. On display are paintings by the most renowned masters, such as Emil Filla, Jan Zrzavý, and František Kupka, as well as works by lesser-known figures of modern art, including Max Kopf, Jaroslav Hněvkovský, and Bedřich Piskač.
The subtitle of the exhibition is "The Transformation of Czech Modern Art in the Lifetime of One Generation 1901–1966."
The centerpiece of the exhibition is one of the gallery’s most recent acquisitions – the painting "Merging of Souls" (Splynutí duší) by Max Švabinský, acquired last year. If we were to identify a single work that marks the beginning of Czech modern art, Merging of Souls would be among the strongest candidates. When Švabinský completed the painting in 1901, he was 27 years old. He passed away in February 1962, at a time when Mikuláš Medek was already creating his Informel canvases. The exhibition culminates with an exceptional collection of Medek’s works from the 1950s and 1960s.
Vladimír Železný (1945) was at the forefront of launching TV Nova in 1994, which under his leadership became the most-watched television channel in the Czech Republic. He has been systematically collecting art since the 1990s, and his collecting activities around the turn of the millennium played a formative role in shaping the Czech art market. Notably, he was the first major contemporary collector to openly share his passion for art and publicly present works from his collection.
The exhibition "Husa na Kampě" is held on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the founding of Galerie Zlatá husa.
